Covid-19 Extensions of Rating Validity
In line with UK CAA Guidance, we are now able to offer remote extension of rating validity to any of the ratings mentioned on this page (as well as the LAPL 24-month “look-back” currency requirement).
This process involves the following:
Assessment of your requirements and compliance with the exemptions
Briefing with a Flight Instructor via videoconference (content based on the normal airborne proficiency check and lasting approximately 1 hour)
Completion of paperwork remotely.
We are offering this complete service at a cost of £35.00 per rating to be extended.

Single Engine Piston / Simple Single Engine Aircraft Class Ratings
If you are planning to revalidate your SEP or SSEA rating by experience, you can do your one hour training flight with us – either in one of our aircraft, or your own (subject to insurance requirements). Even if you don’t fly with us, one of our Flight Examiners can review your documents and complete the revalidation paperwork with you for a small administration fee.
Revalidation or renewal of a Single Pilot Single Engine Instrument Rating can also be combined with the Single Engine Piston Class Rating Proficiency Check, if one is required.
What’s involved in a “one hour training flight”?
In short, any kind of training! There is no formal requirement to complete any specific items. Remember, it is a ‘training flight’, not a test!
However, at Horizon Aviation, we will always cover certain basic skills that often get a bit rusty, such as PFLs and stall recoveries, to give you the chance to practise and remain as safe a pilot as possible. Other than that, you can use the time to cover anything you like and we encourage pilots to make the most of having an instructor sat next to them. It’s not pass or fail, it’s all about brushing up and keeping your skills sharp!
See the boxes below for details of how to renew or revalidate your class rating, or contact us to discuss your requirements.
Single Engine Piston (Land) Class Rating | Revalidation
Revalidation by Experience
In order to revalidate by experience, you will need to satisfy the following requirements within the twelve months prior to rating expiry:
12 hours total flight time in class
6 hours flight time as Pilot In Command
12 take offs and landings as sole manipulator of the controls
A 1 hour training flight with a Flight Instructor*
On completion of these requirements, you must then have the rating revalidated on your licence by a Flight Examiner, or Flight Instructor with FCL.945 privileges (providing that instructor also completed your training flight).
If you also hold a Touring Motor Glider class rating, you can complete the requirements in either class (or a combination) to revalidate both ratings.
*A class or type rating proficiency check or skills test in ANY other class or type satisfies this requirement. In the UK, the 1 hour can be completed in up to three separate flights, provided that they are all flown with the same instructor.
Revalidation by Proficiency Check
If you cannot revalidate by experience, you can do so by completing a Proficiency Check with a Flight Examiner within the three months prior to rating expiry.
Single Engine Piston (Land) Class Rating | Renewal
In order to renew a lapsed rating, you may first need to complete some refresher training (the amount required will depend on several factors, such as the amount of time since you last flew, along with your total experience etc.). When you’re ready, you will then need to complete a Proficiency Check with a Flight Examiner.
If you need to renew a Touring Motor Glider class rating as well, the Proficiency check can be completed in either class and will renew both ratings.
NPPL Simple Single Engine Aircraft Rating | Revalidation
Revalidation by Experience
In order to revalidate by experience, you will need to satisfy the following requirements within the current twenty-four month validity:
12 hours total flight time in class
8 hours flight time as Pilot In Command (6 hours must be within the last 12 months of validity)
12 take offs and landings as sole manipulator of the controls
A 1 hour training flight with a Flight Instructor
On completion of these requirements, you must then have the rating revalidated on your licence by a Flight Examiner.
If you hold more than one class rating, you can complete the requirements in any class (or a combination) to revalidate all ratings. However, you must have completed at least 1 hour (either PIC or dual) in each class to be revalidated.
Revalidation by General Skills Test
If you cannot revalidate by experience, you can do so by completing a General Skills Test with a Flight Examiner prior to rating expiry.
NPPL Simple Single Engine Aircraft Rating | Renewal
In order to renew a lapsed rating, you will need to complete a General Skills Test with a Flight Examiner.
If your rating has lapsed by more than 5 years, then you will first need to complete some refresher training (the amount required will depend on several factors, such as the amount of time since you last flew and your total experience etc.). If the rating expired less than 5 years ago, there is no mandatory refresher training required. However, we recommend that you consider completing some prior to attempting the GST, especially if it’s been a while since you last flew.
Multi Engine Piston (Land) Class Rating
Revalidation, or renewal, of an MEP (Land) Class Rating always requires a proficiency check with a Flight Examiner. However, there are some variations depending on how much experience you have accrued during the 12 months of validity. Horizon Aviation are able to provide revalidation and renewal training and testing in our Diamond DA42 aircraft.
Revalidation or renewal of a Single Pilot Multi Engine Instrument Rating can also be combined with the MEP (Land) Class Rating requirements.
See the boxes below for details of how to renew or revalidate your class rating, or contact us to discuss your requirements.
Multi Engine Piston (Land) Class Rating | Revalidation
Revalidation by Proficiency Check
Revalidation is accomplished by completing a Proficiency Check with a Flight Examiner within the three months prior to rating expiry. If you have completed at least 10 route sectors as pilot in MEP (Land) aircraft within the 12 months of validity, then you are not required to complete one with the examiner (this is usually combined with the rest of the proficiency check).
Multi Engine Piston (Land) Class Rating | Renewal
In order to renew a lapsed rating, you may first need to complete some refresher training (the amount required will depend on several factors, such as the amount of time since you last flew, along with your total experience etc.). When you’re ready, you will then need to complete a Proficiency Check with a Flight Examiner, including an observed “route sector”.
Single Engine / Multi Engine Instrument Rating
We can provide both revalidation of Single / Multi Engine Instrument Ratings and renewal, with or without refresher training , as required. This can be combined with revalidation or renewal of the appropriate Class Rating. For those pilots with current Instrument Rating privileges held on other types / classes, cross-crediting is also available – we can advise on this based on your individual circumstances.
See the boxes below for details of how to renew or revalidate your instrument rating, or contact us to discuss your requirements.
